The criteria to qualify for applying to become a SAPS Reservist are here, but in short, generally speaking they require one to be a SA citizen over 18, not have a criminal record and have passed Matric. One is required to perform 18 hours duty per month. One is unpaid. If a reservist wishes to later join the permanent force, they must then undergo basic police training.
